Tony Stockwell was born in the East End of London and belonged to a
closely-knit family. Mike asked him if, like so many of his peers, he was a
football fanatic as a youngster.
“Actually, as a child my main interest was animals. I loved having pets, and
always felt a great affinity with them. I had rats, mice, cats, dogs…and now I
have two border terriers called Archie and Ada.”
Nothing really unusual in that, of course; but when Tony was in his teens his
life changed course in a way that made him distinctly different from most of
his pals.
At the age of 16 a friend invited him to attend a meeting at a local spiritualist
church.
“From the moment I set foot in the door I knew that this was what I wanted to
do with the rest of my life”, he recalls.
Now, Tony Stockwell is one of the UK’s most highly regarded mediums. Every
week, legions of viewers tune in to watch Psychic Detectives on the Zone
Reality Channel where, along with colleagues Colin Fry and T J Higgs, he
attempts to solve cold-case crimes and mysteries. It’s riveting stuff.
Mike asked Tony when he first became aware of his spiritual gifts.
“It was around the age of 8, actually. I used to see people standing in my
bedroom. I had a ‘companion’, and I used to call him ‘the boy with the dirty face’.
Mike asked Tony what Psychic Detectives did for the families they worked with,
and his answer didn’t surprise him:
“I think it’s the fact that what we discover helps them to gain a sense of closure,
really. Then they can move on with their lives.”
One thing is evident when you talk to Tony Stockwell, and that’s his continual
desire to push forward the boundaries of his craft. He always wants to do
better – and he never once mentioned money. He aims for perfection when he’s
giving off messages, and the driving force behind him is his sincere desire to
help others get in touch with those who have departed to the spirit world.
Look at Tony’s CV and it doesn’t take long to figure out just how respected he’s
become. Derek Acorah, Colin Fry, Carol Bohmer…he’s worked alongside them
all. Regardless, he never name-drops and you can just sense that despite the
road fate has destined him to walk he’s still that tousle-haired kid from the East
End deep down inside.
Tony’s first big step into the media limelight came when he starred in the series
Street Psychic. Mike asked him if stopping people in the street without warning
and engaging them in spiritual dialogue was as daunting as it looked.
“Yes, it could be. Reactions differed, but people were amazed when they
realised that spirit was telling them things that I couldn’t possibly have known.”
The reaction to Psychic Detectives has been overwhelming, says Tony.
“We’ve had really positive feedback. I think its because Colin, TJ and I have
respect for each other and we work so well together as a team.”
Mike asked Tony if he had one piece of advice for Gazette readers. True to form,
he happily obliged:
“Be true to yourself throughout your life – and don’t hurt anyone.”
